We’ve been working on a new and improved version of Gamefroot for the past few months, and it’s finally ready to unveil. Gamefroot 2.1 is a quite a change from the older version of Gamefroot.
This new version boasts a brand new HTML5 game engine, a new visual coding editor powered by Google Blockly, and an improved user interface. We’ve taken the emphasis away from forcing our users to make platform games – now you can make any kind of game you want, as long as you create or choose the assets and scripts you need. Gamefroot is now a blank slate, awaiting your command.
New features include:
- New HTML5 game engine: KiwiJS can run games faster and more efficiently than the old Flash game engine, and on a wider variety of devices. Even Youtube has given up on Flash!
- Mobile friendly: The new game engine enables games to be played on mobile devices – or any device that is web-enabled!
- New publishing channels: Publish to CocoonJS to export for iPhone and Android, and Publish to the Chrome Store. Unlock these powerful new publishing methods by purchasing a Gamefroot Gold subscription!
- New visual code editor: Now you can create scripts powered by Google Blockly. Code everything in your game, from characters to objects to terrain. Google Blockly is used by millions of people in Hour of Code educational events.
- Improved user interface: Now you can make exactly the kind of game you want to make. You don’t need a character, or terrain, or anything else. Your game can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.
- New Layers system: We’ve removed all the different kinds of layers, so now anything can be placed in a layer. Add layers as tilemaps or as regular layers. Tilemaps are for game assets that conform to a grid, and will automatically be set to solid and collide with other game objects. Regular layers are for placing any kind of game objects that aren’t tiles. Add as many layers and tilemaps as you want!
- New Levels system: Add and remove levels to your game from the Levels tab. Now you can use levels as Menu screens. Have as many levels in your game as you want!
- Scale and Rotate assets: Click on an asset using the selection tool, and scale and rotate by dragging on the handles.
- Log in with your Google account: Got a Gmail account? Or a Youtube account? Or Google Plus? Now you can use them to log in to Gamefroot.
All of these changes enable you to push Gamefroot further than it’s ever been pushed before. Try it out, and see what kind of awesome games you can make. We’ll be posting examples showcasing what has become possible, and showing you how it’s done. Go make games!

Have fun!
